WALKING SAVES LIVES

Walk Groups in the newry area

***While we hope walking continues in your own space, our physical walk meetups have temporarily gone on hold during the covid-19 pandemic. We hope to resume these however asap***

Our "Walking Saves Lives" project aims to  help motivate  people to get walking  in order to reap the  physical, social and emotional health benefits. Walking is free, and a great way to have fun and feel great, while meeting new people and enjoying the outdoors.

Walking is so important for emotional and physical health that we are planning a series of short, fun, and social walks through 2020 beginning in the Newry area (no cost). Do join us if you can - all ages, backgrounds and cultures are most welcome, incl children and dogs (though dogs must be under control at all times)! It is essential to call/email us to register ahead so we can discuss your preferences and keep you up-to-date re all things practical on-the-day, especially as there may be late or on-the-day changes.

For a safe and fun walk (30-60 mins) with peers, all walkers must:

  • have shoes or boots that are comfortable, provide adequate support and are appropriate for the conditions (you will know in advance where the walk take place / call us),
  • have (waterproof) jackets or coats appropriate for the conditions
  • register ahead and sign a health form in advance / on the day to confirm responsibility for their own health and safety on each walk.

Please note we are an informal peer group with no medical/trekking expertise, so do check in advance any health or other concerns with your GP, us, or others as appropriate.

Walking Saves Lives

Walking is simple, free, and very safe! It is one of the easiest ways to get active, lose weight, become healthier physically and emotionally, and have fun while making new friends (NHS). Walking can help build stamina, burn calories and make hearts healthier. Our countryside is also incredibly beautiful - don't miss out on these sights, scents and views - all while enjoying really great company!

NHS: Walking For Health

walk schedule

Saturday Morning Walk: Bessbrook

Do join us Sat mornings in Bessbrook for a walk at 11.30am – hail, rain or shine (but not snow, ice or gales)! After meeting, we will walk in local areas given fantastic walks there in the Woods or other green areas. You will need to contact us though to get the exact meeting place, and any weather advice/updates!

Wed Lunch-time Walk: Newry & Mourne

Do join us Wed lunchtimes/afternoons to get walking in and around the awesome city of Newry – maybe the towpath, or the new greenway, or even a short walk in Sliabh Gullion Forest Park OR Kilbroney Park – areas of outstanding natural beauty. The group will decide what walk suits best for the following week – so do give your preferences. And contact us to register and join in the fun!

Ad hoc Walks

In addition to two formal walks each week, spontaneous walks will occur through the week with late notices given out on social media and/or our WhatsApp group. Do ask us about these walks, and/or stay tuned, especially on Facebook.

Virtual Walk Buddies

Especially during the covid-19 pandemic, it may be possible for us to connect you virtually with a walk-buddy - someone you can connect with via WhatsApp or similar while you go walking in your garden, or outdoor space in your area. Email us to find out more, incl the approx. days or times you would like to walk.

In such cases, we recommend common sense and headphones for additional safety so that you can keep your head upright while chatting and remain alert to any potential dangers incl potholes and cars.
